How do our programs impact Minnesota students?

“We are successful due in part to the FORSE (Fostering Opportunities in STEM Education) program at the Minnesota Academy of Science. In our partnership, our students were able to be exposed to various different science projects. There’s not a lot of underserved students going into the science fields, and we want to change the trajectory. FORSE truly was a lifeline for our program this summer.”

Nicoshia Wynn | Director of Relentless Academy (FORSE partner)

“I couldn’t believe I was going to be mentored by an actual scientist. I don’t think I’ve even ever met an actual scientist. My mentor taught me so much. I would have an idea and not be totally sure how to do it and they would just start showing me how to make it by writing a computer program or going to a lab. This was stuff that I thought was so hard but they showed me that I could do it mostly on my own if I wanted to learn, ask questions, and or ask for help.”

Mateo R. | High school junior and 2021 participant in the Environmental Stewardship Institute (FORSE partner)

“I feel participation in Science Bowl is important because it helps develop many life skills, including curiosity, collaboration, empathy, leadership, and having fun! It helps students to learn about science and math in many different ways and shows how many possible career paths are open to them!”

Polly Laugen | Coach of the Wayzata Central Middle School Science Bowl team

“Science Fair ignited my passion for discovery… I learned to think creatively about real world problems, invent practical solutions, be persistent in times of adversity, and communicate effectively to a variety of audiences. These are all skills I continue to use in my undergraduate research and internships today. Science Fair was also one of my first opportunities to carrying out a longer-term research project, and this type of project is more indicative of those found in college and beyond.”

Carolyn Jons | Seven-time Science Fair participant

“It was exciting to be able to present my research to a larger STEM community as well as getting the opportunity to present the growth Hamline has had in developing the Renewable Energy & Environmental Research laboratory and the establishment of our Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope. Both experiences promote collaborative opportunities with STEM professionals and fellow peers, which are tremendous in setting myself up for incredible opportunities down the road.”

Sydney McCutchen | 2022 Winchell participant

“A positive thing about the Winchell Symposium was learning about all types of research and perspectives from my peers that were outside of my specific
area of study.”

Zeke Peña | 2022 Winchell participant
